Broken Vessel

When I thought I could do it alone, God had an interesting way of reminding me that my strength is small compared to His. One day, I unloaded my car with a handful of items, to include my favorite glass water bottle that says, “I can do all things through Christ Jesus who gives me strength” from Philippians 4:13 (This was a gift given to me). As I began to juggle the items in my hands, like many of us tend to do, I thought I could handle one last task of closing the car door. I knew I could possibly drop something, but I thought I had it all under control. All of a sudden, my favorite glass water bottle fell out of my tightly gripped pile and shattered into pieces. Water spilled out once it hit the garage floor. Oh no! Immediately, my daughter felt so sorry for me, and replied with “Awww!” She knew it was my favorite bottle and felt my disappointment. I told the kids to go inside to avoid getting cut. After putting the items down, I looked at the glass, and my broken bottle had my full attention in a unique way. I could not fix it, but I was reminded that God can fix anything. Instantly, Psalm 51:17 came to me. “My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.” This is when I understood brokenness is an acceptable sacrifice to God. Only then, can He tend to our hearts and fix what no one can fix. Strength is not holding it together, but it is relying on the One who gives strength.

We must present ourselves broken before Him, humbled, in reverence, and in faith, knowing that we need Him. He will not turn away a daughter with a broken heart. We have tasks, concerns, hurts, and desires that need tending to. We may try to handle these things in our own strength, but we will find ourselves stressed, frustrated, or defeated because we cannot rely upon our own might. If we have faith in Jesus, we can do all things because He is our strength. We are not enough without Him. There is no other way. He is necessary in every part of our lives every day. All we have to do is let the potter work the clay, molding us into what He wants us to be and not mold ourselves into some image of another woman. Our hearts will look more and more like Jesus if we let the Holy Spirit and His Word speak to us. In turn, our vessels are refilled with living water, we receive forgiveness of our errors, creativity for our current tasks, wisdom for difficult challenges, and joy in any situation. Brokenness is the beginning of your next victory. Are you broken? Do you need a savior? Jesus can fix it and He is willing. Just ask Him.
